Un’esperienza completa, una pedalata all’interno dell’ambiente
unico di un vulcano attivo, tra fitti boschi, antiche colate laviche,
grotte di scorrimento lavico e crateri spenti. Il tutto seguito da un
pranzo gourmet con delizie per il palato frutto di tradizioni culinarie
con sapori di una volta immersi nella natura. Si parte da Milo
in sella alle nostre robuste ma confortevoli e-bike. Il percorso ci
porta subito in salita verso il Bosco della Cerrita, nel territorio di
Sant’Alfio. Attraversiamo questi maestosi alberi (Cerri, una particolare
quercia) e ci dirigiamo sempre in salita verso quote più alte
del vulcano, dove avremo la possibilità di visitare delle grotte di
scorrimento lavico e ambienti lavici di estremo interesse con crateri
spenti “a bottoniera” e antiche colate laviche.
Man mano che saliamo di quota la vegetazione cambia, quasi repentinamente,
attraversiamo boschi di castagno, quercete, pinete
fino a raggiungere l’unico bosco di Betulla presente nel bacino del
mediterraneo, a circa 1.700 metri di quota. Molto particolare la sua
storia di come questa pianta è giunta a latitudini così basse ed è
riuscita ad ambientarsi sul terreno lavico. Poi si inizia la discesa
verso Milo attraverso la bellissima pineta della Cubania.
Prima del punto di arrivo, ci fermiamo per il meritato pranzo-degustazione
alle porte di Milo, per gustare i sapori e le tradizioni di
una volta immersi nella natura presso due host locali. Il legame tra i
Siciliani e l’Etna si stabilisce e rinforza anche attraverso le tradizioni
culinarie che da sempre vengono tramandate dalle nonne,
il raccolto della natura è materia prima in cucina e tutte le ricette
hanno come fine estremo il rispetto dei frutti della natura.

A full-on experience, an e-bike ride in the unique environment of
an active volcano, through dense forests, across ancient lava flows,
past lava caves and extinct craters. All of this is followed by a light
outdoor lunch with local delicacies, the result of long-standing
culinary traditions with fantastic flavours for the palate. We set off
from Milo on our sturdy but comfortable e-bikes. The route takes us
immediately uphill towards the woodland Bosco della Cerrita in the
Sant’Alfio area. We ride past the majestic trees (Cerri, a particular
oak) and head uphill towards the higher altitudes of the volcano,
where we will have the opportunity to visit lava flow caves and extremely
interesting lava environments with extinct “button” craters and
ancient lava flows.
As we climb in altitude, the vegetation changes, almost abruptly,
and we cross chestnut, oak and pine forests until we reach the only
birch forest in the Mediterranean basin, at an altitude of about 1,700
metres. The story of how this plant arrived at such low latitudes
and managed to acclimatise to the lava soil is very special. Then we
begin the descent back towards Milo through the beautiful Cubania
pine forest.
Before reaching the arrival point, we stop for a well-deserved light
lunch on the outskirts of Milo, to enjoy the flavours and traditions
of the past. The bond between the Sicilians and Mount Etna has
been established and strengthened through the culinary traditions
that have always been handed down from grandmothers to the next
